When We Feel
    Helpless to Help...

Someone close to us is ill - family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker - and we suddenly realize how powerless we are.
     Or are we?
In her book If There's Anything I Can Do.... Josephine Hicks shares what she has learned about the vital role friends and loved ones play when illness strikes. With poignant humor and gentle honesty, Hicks has turned her experiences as a caregiver into a real-world guidebook for everyone who has ever wondered how to help and what to say during the universal experience of navigating disease.

Josephine Hicks is a lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina. Daughter and spouse of Episcopal priests, she is active in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Following her partner’s death from pancreatic cancer, she founded Spell the End of Cancer, a Scrabble event to raise money for cancer research. In hopes of eliminating many of the occasions for saying “if there’s anything I can do,” part of the proceeds of this book’s sales will be donated to cancer research.

“A down to earth and eminently practical guide for anyone affected by serious illness – I wish I’d had this resource when I served as a hospice chaplain.Think of this book as a bird sitting on your shoulder, reminding you to pay attention to what the patient and family say (and don’t say), to listen deeply to your own responses, and to act in the most helpful and loving ways possible.

— The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church

“As an oncologist, I’m glad to have this resource for my patients and their families. As the husband of a recently diagnosed cancer patient, I’m grateful someone else has gone through this and can tell me what to expect.”

— David W. Miller, M.D..

“A must read for patients, their caregivers and the friends and family who love them. This practical, experience-based book is just what is needed when patients and caregivers wonder: “what do I need?” and when their friends ask “how can I help?”

— The Rev. Elizabeth Welch, MDiv, BCCSojourn Chaplaincy at San Francisco General Hospital

“This resource reminds us of the support needed by all families facing end-of-life and other critical care situations and gives guidance on how to offer support that makes a real difference.”

— Galen Miller, Executive Vice President National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization
